Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Dr. Christopher Hammell named 2012 Rita Allen Foundation Scholar Cold Spring Harbor, NY – Christopher Hammell, Ph.D., is one of seven 2012 Rita Allen Foundation scholars announced today. An investigator in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s (CSHL) cancer research program, Dr. Hammell is interested in understanding the gene regulatory process that gives rise to normal development in animals as well as alterations in these processes that give rise to diseases such as cancer. Hammell was also selected to receive the special honor of being named the Milton E. Cassel Scholar, a tribute to the memory of a long-time president of the foundation.
“CSHL is very proud to have Dr. Hammell in our ranks and we look forward to the scientific contributions that I am sure will result from support he receives from the Rita Allen Foundation,” said CSHL Director of Research David L. Spector. “One of the great strengths of CSHL is a robust contingent of young faculty, including Dr. Hammell, who are being recognized with competitive awards from leading biomedical foundations.” Hammell received his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Dartmouth Medical School. His research is focused on systematic and functional identification of components that control the activity of multiple regulatory RNAs. These RNAs, called microRNAs, govern the expression of large suites of downstream targets and play important roles in defining specific cell fates. Hammell and colleagues are employing a variety of model organisms and patient-derived cancer cell lines in their research. To directly identify the components that function in controlling normal developmental timing they are employing the small nematode, C. elegans, which enables them to harness the power of forward and reverse genetic approaches.
About Rita Allen Foundation Scholars Rita Allen Foundation Scholars are young leaders in biomedical science who focus on areas of global concern and demonstrate a unique combination of risk-taking and passionate commitment. Scholars have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the National Medal of Science, and the Wolf Prize in Medicine. Over 100 Rita Allen Foundation Scholars have been selected since 1976 and those selected receive grants of up to $110,000 annually for a maximum of five years. |

FEMA Individual Assistance Van To Be at Town Hall on November 11 and 12 Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone announces that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Individual Assistance Van will be at Town Hall Sunday November 11 and Monday November 12 to offer advice, help homeowners determine if they are eligible for Hurricane Sandy disaster assistance and to aid with the necessary paperwork. The van will be at the Jackson Avenue side of Town Hall, which is located at 100 Main Street, Huntington, from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. FEMA’s website defines disaster assistance as “financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. It is meant to help you with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. This assistance is not intended to restore your damaged property to its condition before the disaster.” FEMA suggests that before visiting the van, homeowners visit the website www.disasterassistance.gov to learn about the various types of aid available and basic eligibility guidelines. In other storm-related actions, Supervisor Petrone anounced that the Town-operated shelter at the Village Green Center will close at 8 p.m. Saturday, November 10, as a result of dramatic drop in the number of individuals using the shelter as residents find places to stay with family and friends. The eight warming centers operated by a coalition of the Town, social services agencies and local houses of worship will remain open. Additionally, the Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony originally scheduled for Sunday November 11 has been cancelled.

Petrone Declares Emergency Because of Hurricane Sandy In expectation of Huntington feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone declared a state of emergency, effective at 5 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012, to aid in emergency preparations Supervisor Petrone also ordered the Town’s Emergency Operations Center to open at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, to help coordinate communications among Town departments and fire and rescue services. Representatives from several Town departments with key emergency responsibilities were told to report to the Center, in the Town's general services facility on Pulaski Road in Huntington Station. Under a state of emergency, the Supervisor has the power to close roads, appropriate necessary equipment from all sources and make necessary purchases without following the usual procedures. The declaration also makes available to the Highway Department Town equipment and personnel to assist Highway Department crews. The Supervisor cancelled refuse pickup for Monday and Tuesday, October 29 and 30. Residents are asked not to put out any refuse until their next pickup date. The Supervisor also said that Town parks and beaches will be closed, beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday October 28 through Tuesday October 30. The Supervisor previously had cancelled all programs and activities at Town facilities over that same time period. Supervisor Petrone advised residents to check the Town’s website, http://huntingtonny.gov, the Town’s Facebook page or government access channels 18 (Cablevision) and 38 (FIOS) for updates. Once the Emergency Operation Center opens at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 28, anyone needing to contact the Town for emergencies can call 271-6753. They can call the highway hotline at 499-0444 to report downed trees. Power outages should be reported to LIPA at 800-490-0075.

MTA Refund Claim Period Ending The current fiscal crisis we face as a town is daunting. Our number one priority is to recover all funds due us. In August the New York State Supreme Court ruled that the State acted unconstitutionally in adopting the MTA payroll tax. Currently under New York State law all claims for tax refunds are subject to a three year statute of limitations. The statute will expire on initial employer 2009 MTA payroll tax payments on November 2, 2012. At the Huntington Town Board Meeting on October 7, I authorized the town comptroller to file a claim on behalf of the Town of Huntington to obtain a refund of the MTA payroll tax payments due to the town, and to authorize the town attorney to take all steps otherwise necessary to protect the town’s claim for recovery of any and all town MTA payroll tax payments.
